Davao delegates arriving at Best Western Boracay Tropics

Four(4) young participants(18-30) from Davao City were flown to Boracay for free to attend the first-ever RadioActive Boracay Workshop 2013 held at Best Western Boracay Tropics last October 12, 2013. Guest speakers from Manila, Davao and Boracay took turns in teaching these kids new skills focusing on “takeaways” or things that they can bring with them after attending the workshop.

RB106-Boracay’s Best Mix, your 24/7 online travel radio, along with Radio Boracay FM 106.1 and Magic 89.1 FM Davao came together and started the “ber” months serving the millennials.

Coordinated with Everything Is Possible and supported by the Youth In Action programme of the European Union, RadioActive Boracay Workshop 2013 is part of RadioActive – International radio project for young people. Member countries include Sweden, UK, Italy, Turkey, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

It all started in September’13 with the search for participants who are passionate about music and thirsty for learning new stuff. As part of their activities during the workshop in Davao, the young delegates were asked to go around the city and interview people about their listening habits and here are some of their favorites…

RadioActive-Boracay-2013-Official-POSTERFrom all the applicants, four(4) were chosen, asked to pack their bags for a weekend of learning, creating, and sharing with Boracay serving as their learning environment. Eager to find out what it’s like to visit the Philippine’s premier destination for the very first-time, the young participants excitedly roamed the Island and did the second “Street Team” activity in Boracay. This time exposing them to a wider range of different cultures to interact with – people from all walks of life, breaking barriers using music as their language. And here’s what the international market is listening to…

RadioActive Evaluation Seminar: November 2013-Bali, Indonesia

The ‘Island of the Gods’ served as our lovely meeting place for the RadioActive Evaluation seminar held last November 15-21, 2013. No less than the “Eat, Pray, Love” venue which I had the opportunity to visit for the first time. Here I got to finally meet the other delegates from Europe and Asia and concluded that I made the right “last-minute” decision of attending the seminar since it was just days after the super-typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda hit the Philippines. “Yolanda” had Boracay on its original path based on earlier forecast but moved down south when it finally hit Friday afternoon, November 8. Thousands of lives were lost and millions of families displaced and devastated by the strongest typhoon to hit the world by far. But in the midst of all the sadness, one cannot help but feel the overwhelming love and support from people across the globe, showing Filipinos that they are not alone in these trying times.

As I arrived at the customs counter at the Bali(Denpasar) airport around 8pm on Nov. 15, and as I was handing over my filled-up form to the two customs officials, I was greeted with the warmest welcome one could ever hope for. Upon learning that I came from the Philippines, they immediately asked how I was and “How’s your family?”. They said that they saw everything on the news and that they’re sorry for what had happened. And later on exclaimed “Why not stay here in Bali, live here for good?”. Smiled and thanked them politely. As I was preparing to leave, one of the officials said that they will continue to pray for the Philippines.

This ‘random act of kindness’ doesn’t stop there. When it was my turn to present the Philippines during the seminar’s “Inter-cultural Night” on Nov. 18, I started off by thanking each and everyone who was there that Monday night. “On behalf of my countrymen, allow me to personally thank you for your generosity and please extend our deepest gratitude to the people of your country as well”. I never felt so strong about representing my country, nor felt as patriotic as I did while I was speaking before the international partner countries that I was on the verge of tears as my voice cracked and had to pause for about 5 seconds before speaking again.

In observance of “Black Monday” in the Philippines in support of the typhoon victims, I wore a black jacket to the Inter-cultural night. Unbeknownst to me, most of the other delegates also wore black to the event to show their support. It is indeed a very good feeling to be at the receiving end of all the outpouring of kindness letting you know that someone’s got your back, especially from people you’ve never even met.

What’s NEXT: RadioActive 2014-European Voluntary Service

Bloomfield Boracay students preparing for DepEd’s Press Conference Regionals competition in 2014

The journey has just begun. The trip to Bali made it all clear to me that this outreach project of helping out the young ones, in spite of all the challenges, are definitely worth the pain points, one millennial at a time. As of this writing, we are currently helping out kids from Bloomfield Integrated School in Boracay as they head on to the DepEd’s Press Conference Regional competition in Iloilo City on January 11-12, 2014 after bagging the top award in the Division level held in Kalibo last October 2013.

RadioActive project moves forward in 2014 with the next phase: RadioActive EVS- European Voluntary Service where four(4) millennials from the Philippines will get the chance to travel to the UK or Italy to connect with other participants from partner countries and discuss issues that our young ones face today, aside from the learning aspect that traveling provides. This should be another exciting event to look forward to in 2014 and RadioActive project is definitely getting bigger and better. Thanks to Clair Brown and her amazing team(Raphael & Fanny) at EIP CIC. Indeed, Everything Is Possible.
